The brief was ambitious (and contentious) but Luke Buckmaster from Flicks.com.au approached over 50 Australian film critics and asked us to vote for the greatest Australian films since the year 2000. The clincher was: we needed to rank them in order of best to worst, with number one being our choice for the best film of the century so far.
As you can appreciate, this was a very challenging task, and I speak for myself in saying that the inclusions and running order changed several times. However, when all the votes were tallied, the top ten looked like this…
- Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
- Animal Kingdom (2010)
- Samson & Delilah (2009)
- Chopper (2000)
- Lantana (2001)
- The Babadook (2014)
- The Proposition (2005)
- Sweet Country (2017)
- Snowtown (2011)
- Mystery Road (2011)
You can read how every critic voted as part of the feature and, if you scroll through the list to ‘W’, my individual poll looks something like this:
Note: Number one and number two placed films are interchangeable in rank for me but I included Samson & Delilah in first position due to it being a very ‘important’ film.
What would you include in your list? Feel free to raze mine and build yours in its place.
